Algunas palabras del español que no sabías que sabes / Some Spanish words you didn't know you knew

Si eres una de los cientos de millones de personas que hablan fluidamente el inglés, ¡felicitaciones! También hablas un poquito de español. Y no me refiero a lo que has aprendido estudiándolo, sino a lo que ya sabías antes de comenzar a estudiar.

Algunas de las palabras que usas con frecuencia también se usan en español. Por ejemplo, banana. Si te encuentras en un mercado en España y no encuentras las bananas, ¡tranquilo! Sólo di banana despacio y te entenderán. La palabra banana es una palabra tomada del español.

No es la única palabra tomada del español: ¿necesitas tomarte un café? Pregunta por una cafetería, te entenderán. ¿necesitas comprar alfalfa? Ve de nuevo al mercado y di alfalfa. Si quieres quejarte de los mosquitos, recuerda que en español se dice igual, mosquito. Hacienda, patio, armada, dengue, macho, embargo, plaza, rodeo... son todas palabras del español que los hablantes de inglés usan frecuentemente.

¿Por qué no revisas cuáles son esas palabras? ¡No las uses sólo para hablar inglés, úsalas también para hablar español!

Some of the words you use frequently are also used by Spanish speakers. For instance, banana. If you happen to find yourself in a food market and can't sort out where the bananas are, don't worry, just say 'banana' slowly and people will understand what you've just said. Banana is a word that comes from Spanish.

And isn't the only word of its kind: Do you need a coffee? Ask for a 'cafeteria', people will get it. Do you need to buy alfalfa for your sandwiches? Go back to the food market and ask for 'alfalfa'. If you want to complaint about mosquitoes, go on, in Spanish is the same, 'mosquito'. Hacienda, patio, armada, dengue, macho, embargo, plaza, rodeo... all of these are words taken from Spanish that English speakers use often.

Why don't you check more of these words? Don't use them just when you speak English, use them when you speak Spanish as well!
